LAKE CITY, Fla. (Softball) – Lake-Sumter State College (LSSC) softball keeps their hot streak going with their third-straight Sun-Lakes Conference series sweep over Florida Gateway College. With three wins over the weekend, the Lakehawks improve their historical win streak to 17.
Game One – Lake-Sumter 6, Florida Gateway 0
The Lakehawks took the lead in the bottom of the first after a sacrifice fly from Emma Chisholm to score Sammi Thomas from third. Lake-Sumter added another run to the board in the third after Thomas blasted a double to right field scoring Malayla Miller easily from third base.
Another run for the Lakehawks came in the fifth after a pair of singles from Shannen Luksha and Savannah Ellis. With two in scoring position, a sacrifice fly from Miller scored Luksha.
The Lakehawks secured their 6-0 win in the bottom of the sixth. With Thomas and Chisholm on base to lead off the inning, Valeria Rolon hits a double to centerfield to score two.
Jamie Hegedus scored the Lakehawks' sixth run on an infield error from the Wolves.
Thomas went 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored. Valeria Rolon went 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
Amy Bak improved to 9-2 on the mound for the season with a shutout victory in game one. She allowed just five hits with five strikeouts.
Game Two – Lake-Sumter 11, Florida Gateway 7
Game two was a hard-fought come-from-behind win for the Lakehawks.
After taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, the Wolves scored two in the bottom half of the frame to lead 2-1. Then, the Lakehawks put three on the board in the third before the Wolves scored five to take the lead 7-4.
Trailing by three in the fifth, timely hits from Emma Christensen and Luksha brought the Lakehawks within one of the Wolves.
Nicol Werking, Macie Bourgholtzer, and Thomas loaded the bases in the sixth in time for a base hit from Emma Christensen to score two and take the lead 8-7. Then, a double from Chisholm extended the Lakehawk lead 11-7 for the game two win.
Chisholm went 3-for-4 with five RBIs and one run scored. Emma Christensen went 2-for-4 with one run scored and three RBIs.
Kaitlyn Duquette, Kendall Rumer, and Ellis teamed up on the mound for the game two win. Duquette takes the no-decision with 4.0 innings pitched after allowing seven runs.
Rumer recorded the win after entering the game in the fifth and holding the Wolves scoreless. Ellis recorded the save with 2.0 innings pitched.
Game Three – Lake-Sumter 10, Florida Gateway 2 (6 innings)
With the score tied 1-1 into the fourth inning, Megan Wright started a four-run inning with a lead off walk. Ellis and Luksha loaded the bases with a base hit and a walk.
A sacrifice fly from Duquette scored Wright from third. Then, a double from Werking scored Danika Jones, pinch running for Ellis, and Luksha.
Florida Gateway scored one in the bottom of the fourth before the Lakehawks came back in the fifth to score two more runs.
With Rolon and Wright on base, Ellis placed a sac bunt to advance them into scoring position for Duquette to score them on a basehit to center field.
The Lakehawks secured the mercy rule victory in the top of the sixth after Thomas, Rolon, and Wright loaded the bases. A double from Ellis scored two for a 10-2 win.
Ellis went 2-for-3 with three RBIs while recording the win on the mound with 4.0 innings pitched. She allowed just two runs, one earned, on three hits with a pair of strikeouts.
Rumer recorded the save with the final two innings pitched. She held the Wolves scoreless on just two hits.
With three wins over the Wolves, the Lakehawks improve to 26-11 on the season with a 13-2 record in conference play. Lake-Sumter remains second in conference standing after St. Johns River State College.
The Lakehawks will be back in action in non-conference play on Wednesday, Apr. 2 against Trinity Baptist College at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.
