LEESBURG, Fla. (Softball) – Lake-Sumter State College (LSSC) softball took on Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ) this weekend to open Sun-Lakes Conference play. The Lakehawks outscored the Manta Rays 17-0 to sweep the opening series.
Game 1 – FSCJ 0, Lake-Sumter 4
The scoreboard was tied at 0-0 until a triple from Kaitlyn Duquette in the bottom of the fifth allowing Nicol Werking to score gave the Lakehawks a 1-0 lead.
The Lakehawks extended their lead 4-0 in the bottom of the sixth when Savannah Ellis hit a base-clearing double to centerfield.
Duquette also pitched a complete-game shutout to improve to 2-2 on the season. She allowed just three hits and four walks while retiring nine.
Game 2 – FSCJ 0, Lake-Sumter 8 (5 innings)
The Lakehawks took game two over FSCJ by mercy rule.
Emma Christensen went 2-for-3 with the go-ahead solo homerun in the top of the second and a two-run homerun in the fourth.
Emma Chisholm secured the mercy rule victory for the Lakehawks with a grand slam in top of the fifth.
Sophomore Amy Bak recorded the complete-game shutout win on the mound improving to 3-1 on the season. Bak allowed just two hits and two walks while striking out three.
Game 3 – FSCJ 0, Lake-Sumter 5
Game three was a quiet 0-0 ballgame until the top of the fifth when the Lakehawks took a 3-0 lead over the Manta Rays. The Lakehawks were able to extend their lead 5-0 in the top of the seventh to secure the series sweep.
Payton Parkes, Christensen, and Ellis each recorded two hits in the win. Christensen had a pair of RBIs.
Ellis tossed a complete-game shutout to record her first win of the season. She allowed eight hits while fanning three.
With three wins, Lake-Sumter improved to an 8-7 overall record and a 3-0 record in conference. After the first weekend of conference play, the Lakehawks tie with St. Johns River State College and Florida Gateway College in first place conference standing.
