BARNESVILLE, Ga. (Softball) – The Lake-Sumter State College (LSSC) softball team traveled to Georgia over the weekend for a pair of double headers with No. 23 Gaston College (NJCAA Division I ranking) and Gordon State College. The Lakehawks finished the road trip with a 2-2 record.
Friday's first game presented the Lakehawks a challenge versus a nationally ranked opponent for the first time this season. Gaston College was ranked No. 23 in the 2024 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Preseason Poll.
The Rhinos entered Friday's matchup with a 13-1 record, their only loss on the 2025 season being to No. 5 Louisburg College (NJCAA Division II).
Game one versus Gaston was a close matchup. The Rhinos took a 1-0 lead in the third before the Lakehawks tied the score up in the fourth.
A two-run homerun the bottom of the fourth gave the Rhinos the lead back 3-1. Lake-Sumter put one more run on the board, but ultimately fell short to Gaston College.
Megan Wright, Savannah Ellis, and Emma Christensen each recorded two hits.
Kaitlyn Duquette recorded the loss on the mound with 4.0 innings pitched. She allowed three runs on six hits.
The Lakehawks recorded two wins over Gordon State College. With 12 hits on Friday evening, the Lakehawks defeated the Highlanders 10-3.
Emma Chisholm, Shannen Luksha, and Christensen each had homeruns in the win.
Sophomore Amy Bak recorded the complete game win improving to a 2-1 record on the season.
On Saturday, the Lakehawks recorded their second win of the weekend over Gordon State, 15-10.
Chisholm, Christensen, Payton Parkes, and Valeria Rolon each had two or more hits in the win. Christensen and Luksha blasted their second homeruns of the weekend while Malayla Miller hit her first.
Kendal Rumer improved to 2-1 on the mound with 3.1 innings pitched.
Later in the day, Lake-Sumter faced Gaston College again. The Lakehawks could not handle the offensive surge early in the game falling to the Rhinos in five innings, 14-2.
With a pair of wins over Gordon State, the Lakehawks improved their overall record to 5-7 going into Sun-Lakes Conference play this weekend.
