ALABASTER, Ala. (Softball) – Lake-Sumter State College (LSSC) softball's season came to a close at the 2024 South District Championship. After losing in extra innings to Marion Military, the Lakehawks came out on day two to secure an 8-2 win over Wallace Community College-Dothan (WCC-Dothan).
The Lakehawks lost in the second round of elimination games to the top-seeded Central Alabama Community College.
Lake-Sumter 9, WCC-Dothan 2
In their first elimination bracket game, the Lakehawks took an early 8-0 lead over WCC-Dothan.
The Lakehawks maintained the shutout until the fifth inning when WCC-Dothan, with the threat of being mercy ruled, put one run on the board. The Governors scored another in the top of the sixth, but their offensive charge ended there.
Lake-Sumter secured the win in the bottom of the sixth after back-to-back doubles from Payton Parkes and Savannah Ellis extending the lead 9-2.
Jordyn Anderson and Ellis each went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
Starting pitcher Amy Bak recorded the win on the mound with 5.0 innings pitched. She allowed just two runs on seven hits with three strikeouts.
Ellis entered the game in relief of Bak. She pitched the final two innings, helping the Lakehawks keep the lead and stay alive in the tournament for one more day.
Lake-Sumter 3, Central Alabama 11
The Lakehawks took a 2-0 lead from the top of the first. After a pair of walks from Parkes and Emma Chisholm, Anderson sent a two-out single to right field scoring both.
The Trojans took the lead back in bottom of the first with a three-run homerun over the left field fence.
Central Alabama maintained their 4-2 lead for most of the game. They added runs in the fourth and the fifth before a five-run sixth inning to secure the mercy rule victory over Lake-Sumter.
Central Alabama's win eliminated Lake-Sumter from the tournament.
Anderson went 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Kaleigh Thomas went 1-for-2 with an RBI.
Kaitlyn Duquette recorded the loss on the mound after allowing four runs on four hits in the bottom of the first.
Kayley Williams took the mound in relief in the second inning. Williams allowed five runs on four hits with three strikeouts.
The Lakehawks finished the season with a 30-29 overall record, the first back-to-back 30-win season in the history of the program.
