PREVIEW: Lakehawk Softball Underdog Going Into 2024 South District Championship

ALABASTER, Ala. (Softball) – The Lake-Sumter State College (LSSC) softball team travels to Alabaster, Ala. for the 2024 NJCAA Division II Softball South District Championship hosted at Veterans Park from May 9-12. The champion will advance to the 2024 NJCAA Division II Softball World Series in Spartanburg, SC.

Lake-Sumter joins St. Johns River State College and South Florida State College from Region 8. The remaining five spots in the tournament come from Region 22 teams in Alabama.

The Lakehawks enter the tournament as an underdog, the no. 6 seed.

The tournament kicks off Thursday afternoon. The Lakehawks will play against no. 3 seed, Marion Military Institute (MMI) at 6:00 p.m. EST.

MMI finished the regular season with a 41-15 record and second in Region 22 standings after the 2024 Alabama Community College Conference Champion, Central Alabama Community College.

The winner between Lake-Sumter and Marion Military will remain in the winners bracket, advancing to play the winner of no. 2 St. Johns River State College (SJRSC) and no. 7 Wallace Community College – Dotham (WCC-Dotham) tomorrow at 8:30 p.m. EST.

No. 2 SJRSC is the 2024 Sun-Lakes Confernence/Region 8 Champion, entering the tournament with a 44-14 regular season record. No. 7 WCC-Dotham finished fifth in Region 22 and enters the tournament with a 24-20 record.

Admission into the park is $15 per day or $20 for a tournament pass. Children under the age of 6 are free.
