Lakehawk Softball Splits with Daytona State
LEESBURG, Fla. (Softball) – Lake-Sumter State College (LSSC) softball hosted Daytona State College for a double header on Tuesday afternoon. The Lakehawks and the Falcons split the day with Lake-Sumter taking game one 5-4 and Daytona State taking game two by mercy rule 11-2.
Game One – Lake-Sumter 5, Daytona State 4
Daytona State started the game off with a 1-0 lead after the top of the first inning. The Falcons added to their lead in the top of the third with a two-run homerun.
Lake-Sumter put one to the board in the bottom of the third after Emma Chisholm led off the inning with a single. Then, Kaleigh Thomas scored Chisholm from third on a sacrifice fly to right field.
In the bottom of the fourth, Megan Wright led off with a double. Alex Baez stepped up next with a triple down the left field line to score Wright.
Macie Bourgholtzer came next with a single for Baez to score easily from third to tie the score at 3-3.
The Lakehawk lead did not stick long with Daytona State putting another run on the board in the fifth, taking the lead 4-3.
Lake-Sumter tied up the game again in the bottom of the fifth by capitalizing on an overthrow error from the Falcons' third baseman.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Lakehawks were able to secure the lead. Bourgholtzer reached on error and scored from first after a basehit from Savannah Ellis for the go-ahead run.
The Lakehawks defeated the Falcons 5-4 in game one.
Baez went 2-for-2 with one RBI, one walk, and one run scored. Ellis went 3-for-4 with one RBI.
Freshmen pitchers Kaitlyn Duquette and Ellis teamed up on the mound for the game one win.
Duquette was the starting pitcher with 4.0 innings pitched. She allowed three runs on two hits with three strikeouts.
Ellis closed the game to record the win with 3.0 innings pitched. She allowed just one run on two hits with one strikeout.
Ellis improved to a 4-3 record on the mound for the season so far.
Game Two – Lake-Sumter 2, Daytona State 11
Daytona State took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
Payton Parkes singled on a line drive to center field and scored after Baez hit a line drive down the left field line.
Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the third, Alexis Adams blasted a double to left field scoring Ellis from third to tie the game at 2-2.
The game stayed tied at 2-2 until the top of the fourth inning where the Falcons scored nine runs.
The Lakehawks were unable to come back from the nine run deficit, falling to Daytona State by mercy rule, 11-2, in five innings.
Chisholm and Adams both went 2-for-3. Adams and Baez had one RBI each.
Kayley Williams recorded the loss on the mound with 3.2 innings pitched. She allowed seven runs, five earned, on seven hits with one walk and one strikeout.
The Lakehawks move to a 7-11 overall record on the season, Daytona State moved to 7-3.

Lakehawk Softball will open Sun-Lakes Conference play on the road on Friday at South Florida State College for game one of the three game series.
