Lakehawk Softball Picks Up Two Mercy Rule Wins Over Oakland CC

LEESBURG, Fla. (Softball) – Behind 21 hits and 23 runs, the Lake-Sumter State College (LSSC) softball team took two from Oakland Community College (OCC) in dominating fashion with a pair of mercy rule wins on Tuesday afternoon. The Lakehawks won game one 13-1 and game two 10-2 improving to 13-9 on the season.

Game One – Lake-Sumter 13, Oakland CC 1

OCC took the lead from the top of the first with a homerun but the Lakehawks responded with seven runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a commanding 7-1 lead.

 The Lakehawks added one more in the bottom of the second, then tacked on five more in the fourth to seal the 13-1 victory over the Raiders.

The Lakehawk offense was led by Reese Snipes, who went 3-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs and Raquel Camgulia who also went 3-for-3 with and RBI. Alexis Adams and Makenzi Heaton also added a pair of RBIs with two hits and two runs scored.

Ali Shenefield recorded the win on the mound, pitching five innings allowing just one run on one hit while striking out four. The Region 8 Pitcher of the Week improved to 8-0 on the season.

Game Two – Lake-Sumter 10, Oakland CC 2

Lake-Sumter took the lead and maintained it from the first inning in game two. With both stellar pitching and offense, the Lakehawks were able to secure a 10-2 win over the Raiders.

The Lakehawks took a 3-0 lead after three innings, holding the Raiders scoreless until the fourth.

Camuglia started a rally in the bottom of the fifth with a solo shot to center field, her first of the season. The Lakehawks put three more runs up extended their lead over the Raiders 7-2.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Lakehawks took the win walk-off style. Molly Bender led off with a single to center field, Camuglia walked, and Kreighton Steinke was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out.

Alexis Adams also drew a walk to score Bender for their first run of the inning. Darian Pippin grounded out up the middle to score Elizabeth Auciello, pinch running for Camuglia.

OCC's catcher threw a pickoff to second base, allowing Bella Baez, pinch running for Steinke, to score the tenth and final run of the game.

Camuglia led the Lakehawks in game two going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Bender also had two hits with two runs scored and a stolen base.

Pippin had an impressive day both on the mound allowing just two runs on four hits with a career-high of nine strikeouts in six innings pitched. With five wins on the season, Pippin is now tied with Allie Geier (2018-19) for fourth all-time career wins in program history with 16.

The Lakehawks will play a double header with Jackson College at Sleepy Hollow on Thursday, March 2 at 11:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
