Lakehawk Softball Takes Two from Hillsborough CC on Saturday
The Lakehawks scored 13 runs on 19 hits
LEESBURG, Fla. (Softball) – Behind 19 hits and 13 runs scored, the Lake-Sumter State College (LSSC) softball team picked up two wins over Hillsborough Community College (HCC) on Saturday afternoon. The Lakehawks took game one 7-1 and achieved a come-from-behind 6-5 win in game two.
Game One – Lake-Sumter 7 (5-2), HCC 1 (2-4)
In game one, the Lakehawk offense came alive in the third inning where they scored six of their seven runs.
Tatum McGrath drew a walk in four straight pitches. With one out, Molly Bender stepped up with a two-run blast to left center field. Reese Snipes, Raquel Camuglia, and Kreighten Steinke all hit consecutive singles to load the bases for Bella Baez.
Baez hit a long a ball down the left field line to clear the bases. A throwing error by the HCC short stop allowed Baez to score from second to secure the Lakehawks' 7-1 final score.
Darian Pippin earned the complete-game win to improve her record to 3-0 on the season. Pippin allowed nine hits, no walks, and just one run while fanning three HCC batters.
Game Two – Lake-Sumter 6 (6-2), HCC 5 (2-5)
The Lakehawks kept game two very interesting winning walk-off style in the seventh.
Lake-Sumter took lead in the first inning. Bender reached on a fielder's choice, then Camuglia scored her from second to on a single to center field.
Freshman pitcher Elizabeth Auciello held the HCC offense to no runs and just two hits until the third inning. With five basehits, they were up 4-1 when Ali Shenefield entered the game to relieve Auciello.
The score remained the same until the fifth. Pippin entered to pinch hit for Alex Baez and delivered with a double off the right center fence.
Molly Bender reached first on a ground ball to the pitcher. Smart baserunning by Pippin stunned the HCC defense allowing herself to advance to third and Bender to reach safely.
Reese Snipes singled to center field scoring both Pippin and Bender. Camuglia reached on a fielder's choice and Desiree Romeo came up with a two-out hit to score Camuglia tying up the game 4-4.
HCC took the lead back in the top of the sixth but it did not last long.
With the score 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth, B. Baez led off with a single off of the glove of the third baseman followed by a walk by McGrath.
Bender forced an error on the first baseman allowing B. Baez to score tying the game at 5-5.
In an exciting seventh inning, Camuglia led off with a base hit in the 5-6 hole followed by a perfectly executed sac bunt by Romeo to advance Camuglia to second.
Kreighton Steinke came next with a single to left field advancing Camuglia to third. Makenzi Heaton up with one out hit a sac fly to shallow right field allowing Camuglia to easily score and secure the win walk off style.
Shenefield recorded the win on the mound with 4.1 innings pitched moving to 3-0 on the season. She allowed just four hits, no walks, one earned run while retiring seven.
Up next for the Lakehawks
The Lakehawks will travel to St. Petersburg, Fla. on Tuesday, February 7 for a double header against St. Petersburg College.
