Five Lakehawks Earn All-Conference

Five Lakehawks Earn All-Conference

Leesburg, Fla. – After tying the program record for wins in a season at 32, the Lake-Sumter State College softball program had five members earn All Mid-Florida Conference honors as announced Tuesday.

Morgan Johnson – First Team, Outfield

Johnson opened up her career like a shaken can of soda that exploded everywhere, collecting nine hits in her first three starts while scoring five times in the process. The freshman continued her onslaught of hitting ranking top 10 in the country in hits most of the season. Johnson ended with, a team leading, .411 batting with 60 hits and 34 runs scored. The Spring Hill native hit a whopping .489 with runners in scoring position and finished with 22 stolen bases.

Emily Kolwicz – First Team, At-Large

Selected at the "at-large" position, Kolwicz embodies everything you think of as a utility player. As a freshman, she started all 32 games in left field. This year, Kolwicz started games at all three outfield positions as well as third base and even one game at second base, sometimes changing positions throughout the game. While moving all over the field, the sophomore maintained a .353 batting average and committed just five errors in 50 games.

Alyssa Opsahl – First Team, Infield

Opsahl started 46 of 50 games at shortstop for the Lakehawks during her freshman campaign. A fixture in the middle of the lineup, "Oops" hit .407 with an on-base percentage of .468 while driving in 30 RBI's on 55 hits. The left side swinging middle infielder added 11 doubles, two triples and three homeruns while slugging .581 this season.

Mackenzie Trgo – Second Team, Outfield

After hitting .300 in non-conference play, Trgo turned it on for conference play hitting .377 while driving in 12 RBI's with three doubles and three home runs. The sophomore finished the season with a team high 36 RBI's and tied for the team high in home runs with six. Trgo added 13 stolen bases while committing just one error in the outfield over 45 games.

Jeritza Montero – Second Team, Infield

After missing several games to begin the season with an injury, Montero made her presence felt as a cornerstone of the defense at second base fielding .955 and hitting third in the lineup. Her 16 doubles are good enough for fourth all-time in a single season. Montero went on a tear during conference hitting .383 with 17 RBI's on four doubles and the first home run of her career. In 151 plate appearances on the season, Montero struck out a miniscule four times.

These five players were a big reason the team achieved as many accolades as they did. Lake-Sumter finished fourth in the conference while reaching the 30-win plateau for only the second time in program history. The group also broke the program records for runs scored and RBI's by a team.

Moving forward, all First-Team members will be eligible for All-Region selection at the conference chair meeting later this week.
