Softball Opens Conference Play

Leesburg, Fla. –  After suffering two losses to open up Mid-Florida Conference play, the Lake-Sumter State College softball team has improved their record to 3-3 heading into the second week of action.

College of Central Florida had the Lakehawks number in their opening double header taking the first game 12-1. In game two, Lake-Sumter made a run at the No. 1 team in the nation, taking a 7-6 lead going into the bottom of the sixth. The Patriots hit a go-ahead grand slam in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead and the game, 10-7.

Lake-Sumter welcomed Daytona State College for their conference home opener Tuesday. The Falcons jumped out in front early with a 5-2 lead before the Lakehawks scored six in the fourth inning to go up, 8-5. Cissy Doolittle came in from the bullpen to earn her sixth win of the year in the team's 11-8 victory.

Game two did not go as planned for LSSC with Daytona State winning, 4-1.

St. John's River State College traveled to Leesburg for a double-header on Saturday. A tightly contested first game had the two teams tied up at 3-3 in the fourth. A two-out single by Summer Cowen broke the tie in the sixth. Kayla Reichardt shut the Viking offense down in the final three innings to earn the win, 4-3.

Game two had the Lakehawk offense out in front early with a 3-0 lead after the first inning. A five run fifth inning, coupled with a dominant pitching performance by Doolittle gave LSSC the 8-0 win in five innings.

Morgan Johnson continues her solid freshman campaign and is currently eighth in the state with 41 hits. Alyssa Opsahl continues her strong effort at the plate hitting .411 on the season with a .472 on-base percentage. Jeritza Montero is tied for third in Region 8 with 13 doubles on the year. Doolittle is making the most of her red-shirt sophomore season, boasting a 7-0 record with a 2.98 ERA in 14 appearances.

Lake-Sumter (23-11, 3-3) will make the trip up to Florida State College – Jacksonville (5-11, 0-4) Tuesday to take on the Blue Wave. Game one will begin at 3 pm.
