Davis Gets Two Wins and a Save

Leesburg, Fla. – With a day off of games Tuesday, the Lake-Sumter State College softball team had a four-game set Thursday and Friday in which they went 3-1.

A double header against St. Pete College on Thursday was first on the schedule. Brandi Davis was the biggest difference in the ball game. After giving up two runs in the second inning, Davis shut down the Titans offense the rest of the way out to give her team a great opportunity to win the game. LSSC was able to tie it up 2-2 in the fourth before taking a 4-2 lead in the fifth. They were able to add one more insurance run in the seventh while Davis shut the door in the bottom half for the complete game victory, 5-2. Casey Allen had a big two RBI double in the game while Emily Kolwicz added her first triple of the year.

Game two did not go as well as game one. SPC jumped out early with two runs in the first, two more in the second and then four in the third inning. The Titans led 8-2 after the first three innings and would eventually take the game, 9-3. Cissy Doolittle suffered the loss in the circle. Kierstyn Kohlmaier and Alyssa Woolums both tallied two hits and each had a double in a losing effort. Woolums drove in 2 of the teams 3 runs, with the third one coming off the bat of Jennifer Bryant.

South Florida State met Lake-Sumter for the final two games of their rare, five game series this season on Friday. It was a neutral site game played at the South Lake Campus with LSSC being the home team. SF jumped out in front early with two runs in the top of the first. Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth, the Lakehawk offense finally got rolling. After knotting up the game at 3-3, the Lakehawks plated four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Davis, who relieved starter Sarah Grindrod, got the win in the 7-3 victory. Davis is now 6-0 on the season. Emily Kolwicz was big in the comeback for LSSC with a double, a triple, two runs scored and three RBI's to her credit. Allen added another two-hit performance, including a double and two RBI's.

The final game of the five-game series saw Lake-Sumter get up early and never look back. Up 5-1 heading into the fifth, starter Kayla Reichardt allowed the only run of her start. Davis made her third appearance of the week with one out in the seventh to earn her first save of the season with Reichardt getting the win. Kolwicz continued her stellar day with three more hits, two runs and an RBI. Woolums and Bryant boasted two hit performances as well.

Lake-Sumter (12-8) will meet up with Polk State (5-9) in Leesburg for the final two games of their 2020 series. The start time has been moved to noon due to the threat of rain moving into the area later in the day.
