Lakehawk Baseball Drops Road Game to Polk State
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (Baseball) – The Lake-Sumter State College (LSSC) baseball team traveled to Winter, Haven, Fla. for a single non-conference game against Polk State. After a back-and-forth effort, the Lakehawks fell to the Eagles in the bottom of the ninth, 9-8.
Lake-Sumter took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first after a pair of singles and heads up baserunning from Camden Williamson and Mason Blackburn.
Polk State took the lead back in the second 6-2.
The Lakehawks tacked on three runs in the third and one more in the fourth to tie up the game at 6-6. Then, Lake-Sumter took a two-run lead in the sixth.
A leadoff walk from Christian Cantwell followed by a double from Brady Byers put the two in scoring position with one out. Cantwell was able to reach home on a wild pitch followed by a sacrifice fly by Ean Gimson to score Byers.
Polk State answered back in the bottom of the sixth with two runs to tie up the score once again at 8-8.
The game remained tied into the bottom of the ninth when the Eagles managed to walk the bases loaded. In their final at-bat, a hit-by-pitch secured the walk-off win over the Lakehawks for Polk State.
Gimson, Blackburn, and Ryan Villaman all recorded two hits. Villaman and Eli Thurmond each had two RBIs each.
Three Lakehawks saw time on the mound against the Eagles.
Starting pitcher Colby White tossed 4.2 innings allowing six runs, all unearned, on six hits with two strikeouts.
Riley Fitzegerald took the mound for 1.1 innings of work. The Eagles scored two unearned runs on no hits and a pair of walks.
Closer Ricky O'Dette recorded the loss with 2.2 innings pitched. He allowed one run on no hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
The Lakehawks move to a 3-2 overall record on the season.
