Lakehawk Baseball Offense Shines Against St. Petersburg

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (Baseball) – Lake-Sumter State College (LSSC) baseball traveled to St. Petersburg College on Monday afternoon. The Lakehawks added a "W" to the win column after defeating the Titans 6-1.

The Lakehawks took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning by capitalizing on several mistakes from the Titan defense.

In the top of the fifth, Matthew Dumas drew a two-out walk. Ryan Jenkins stepped up to the plate with a double to score Dumas.

In the sixth, the Lakehawks loaded the bases with singles from Ryan Villaman, Edwin Melendez, and Tad Brooks. Villaman crossed the plate on a wild pitch, extending the Lakehawk lead by four.

Lake-Sumter added another run to the board in the seventh after Jenkins blasted his second double of the game. Andrew Merchant came up to bat next with a single to left field to score Jenkins.

The Lakehawks added one more run in the top of the ninth to solidify their win.

Jenkins reached base on an error and then stole second. Merchant came up with his second hit of the day to score Jenkins from second base, extending their lead 6-1 over the Titans.

St. Petersburg tried to answer back to the Lakehawk offense, but were cut short at just one run on three hits in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Jackson Raper and Robert Tracy teamed up on the mound for the Lakehawk win. With 6.0 innings pitched, Raper improved to 1-0 on the season allowing just one run on 10 hits and one walk with six strikeouts.

Tracy recorded a save with 3.0 innings of work. He held the Titans scoreless while allowing just three hits with four strikeouts.

Merchant went 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Jenkins went 2-for-5 with one RBI and three runs scored.

Lake-Sumter improved to 2-5-1 on the season, while St. Petersburg moved to 3-3. The Lakehawks and the Titans will meet again next week on Wednesday, Feb. 14 at The Hawks Nest.
