Lakehawk Baseball Takes Series over South Florida State

LEESBURG, Fla. (Baseball) – The Lake-Sumter State College (LSSC) baseball team took two out of three from Sun-Lake Conference opponent South Florida State College (SFSC) over the weekend. At SFSC on Friday, the Lakehawks fell 13-5 but came back for Saturday's double header at The HawksNest with a pair of wins, 6-3 and 2-1.   

Game One – Lake-Sumter 5, SFSC 13

The Lakehawk offense struggled on Friday afternoon as they dropped a 13-5 decision to SFSC.

The Lakehawks scoring three runs in the top of the second after the Panthers took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Unfortunately for the Lakehawks, the second inning was the last time took a lead in game one.

Nate Tinder, Auston Chisenhall, and Carson Russell all recorded two hits on the game. Russell also had two RBIs.

Sophomore pitcher Jake Dorn recorded the loss with two innings pitched after allowing seven runs on seven hits with two strikeouts. Dorn moved to 0-3 on the season.

Preston James saw two innings on the mound, allowing three runs on four hits and one walk with two strikeouts. Tyler Toro pitched 3.1 innings allowing three runs on five hits and four walks with two strikeouts.

Game Two – Lake-Sumter 6, SFSC 3

In game two, Lake-Sumter took a 6-0 lead after scoring two in the second, one in the third, and three in the fourth inning.

The Panthers tried to rally late in the game scoring one run in the fifth and two in the sixth but the Lakehawk pitching and defense were able to hold them off.

Levi Anderson, Ryan Monaghan, Tinder, Kendal Spencer, Luke Bentley, and Russell each recorded one of the Lakehawk's six hits. Tinder and Spencer each had two RBIs.

Max Windham recorded the win for game two after pitching six innings, allowing three runs on nine hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Windham moved to 4-0 on the season.

Tinder recorded his fourth save of the season after entering the game to pitch in the seventh.

Game Three – Lake-Sumter 2, SFSC 1

The Lakehawks were able to clinch the series over SFSC after a come-from-behind 2-1 win.

The Panthers scored one run in the top of the first and maintained that lead for nearly the entire game until the sixth when the Lakehawks scored two taking the lead for good.

With Bentley and Anderson on base, Monaghan legged out a triple to center and scored two runs.  

Sebastian Miller had another great outing on the mound pitching seven innings, allowing just one run one four hits while fanning nine Panther batters. Miller moved to 2-1 on the season.

Robert Tracy pitched one inning giving up just one hit and one walk with one strikeout.

Tinder entered the game in the ninth to close recording his fifth save of the season with three strikeouts. With Tinder's save, he now ties for fifth in saves for a single season in the Lakehawk Baseball record book.

The Lakehawks improved to 9-13 overall and 3-3 in conference play. Their two wins now tie for third in conference standing.  

Up next for the Lakehawks

The Lakehawks will travel to Rollins College to play a single game against their JV team on Wednesday, March 8 at 2:30 p.m.
