Spring Sports Sprint into February

Spring Sports Sprint into February

Leesburg, Fla. – Both the Lake-Sumter State College baseball and softball teams are off and running in the 2021 season.

Softball jumped out of the shoot extremely well opening their season to the tune of a 5-0 record. The team's wins coming against Webber JV, South Florida State College and Georgia Highlands College.

Morgan Johnson currently leads the team in hitting with 13 hits in 24 at-bats. Good enough for a .542 batting average to go along with her eight stolen bases. Mackenzie Trgo and Nicole Smith continue to provide the pop in the middle of the order with two home runs each through their first eight games. Alyssa Woolums picked up right where she left off in 2020, with a team leading .611 OBP, while hitting .417 and throwing out 40% of her runners behind the plate.

In the circle, Alyssa Dragovich and Cissy Doolittle lead the way with two wins each. Darian Pippin picked up her first collegiate victory on the road against South Florida. The pitching staff as a whole carries a 3.17 ERA and a .268 opponent batting average.

Dragovich was selected as the NJCAA Region 8 Pitcher of the Week for her opening day start against Webber JV where she tossed a complete game shutout, allowing just two hits on 71 pitches.

Baseball enters February with a 3-3 record on the season. An exciting opening weekend saw the Lakehawks score 23 runs in their first two games, resulting in two wins over Eastern Florida State College.

Ty Milliner has gotten off to a fantastic start with a .318 batting average with an OBP of .500. He has reach base seven times as a result of a walk and crossed up plate seven times. Luke Brown and teammate, Alberson Mogollon are tied with a team leading six RBI's through six games.

Caleb Wood has made one start from the mound and carries a 2-0 record with a microscopic 1.04 ERA. The young lefty is averaging 8.3 strikeouts per nine innings pitched. The other win belongs to Zander Eastburn who appeared in a relief roll against Eastern Florida.
