Baseball Collects 3 Wins on the Week

Leesburg, Fla. – The Lake-Sumter State College baseball team is out to a fast start after going 3-1 during a four game stretch last week.

The Lakehawks opened the week on the road against Indian River State College. LSSC owned a 3-1 lead after the first three innings and never gave it up getting the 7-4 victory.

Naphis Llanos and Chenar Brown tallied three hits apiece. Brown continues his hot start to the season with two more doubles and an RBI. Seth Wysocki went five innings and allowed just one run while striking out four on his way to the victory on the mound. Easton Jackson tossed a clean ninth inning for his second save of the year.

It was another road game for LSSC on Wednesday. This time the team was headed down south to Winter Haven to take on South Florida State. With a 5-2 lead heading into the eighth, the wheels fell off for the Lakehawks. SF was able to plate six runs in the bottom of the eighth to go up 8-5. Lake-Sumter was unable to answer and took the loss.

Brown went 2 for 5 with a home run and two RBI's in a losing effort. Garbiel Dorsey also added a long ball in this game going 2 for 3. Matthew Taubensee got the start, throwing five solid innings before giving way to the bullpen. Jackson was hit with the loss, his first of the season.

The Lakehawks were back at home Friday, ready to take on Eastern Florida. With a three-run first inning, the Titans looked to be in good shape. LSSC continued to hang around, getting their way back into the game. Knotted up at 4-4 heading into the bottom of the ninth, the stage was set for a dramatic finish.

With two outs and Brown standing 90 feet away, Dorsey drove a base hit into short right centerfield to give his team a 5-4 win in walk-off fashion over the Titans. Brandon Riehm had a solid day at the plate going 3 for 4 with two doubles and an RBI. Bryant Heston was the pitcher of record having thrown the previous five innings in relief and allowing just one base runner.

The week ended with a 12-1 win over Inspiration Academy on Saturday. Llanos tallied three hits while Evan Badger and Dorsey each had a two hit performance. Khalil Smith hit his first home run of the season in the win as well. Jake Janata got his first win of 2020 with five innings of one hit baseball from the hill.
