Baseball Continues Hot Start in Conference

Leesburg, Fla. – Seven games into the Mid-Florida Conference schedule and the Lake-Sumter State College baseball team is toward the top of the standings.

After suffering a 5-2 loss to St. Johns River State College at home Monday, the team came back on Wednesday for wild 13 inning contest that was eventually suspended due to darkness. After trailing the Vikings 4-1 heading into the ninth, LSSC drove in three runs to push the game into extras. Both teams exchanged one run each in the 12th. The game will resume in the top of the 14th when the two teams meet up again April 12.

Friday marked the start of a three game set with Daytona State. The Falcons took game one in Leesburg, 6-4. The Lakehawks broke out the offense for game two with 19 hits and 13 runs scored for a 13-9 victory to even the series at 1-1. Game three was back in the Burg on Monday and again it was an offensive battle for both teams. The fans got to witness a total of 27 hits and then 17 runners cross home plate in total. Alan Alonso was able to scamper home on a throwing error in the bottom of the 10th to give his team the 9-8 win.

Wednesday marked the next series for the Lakehawks. This one on the road heading north to take on Florida State College – Jacksonville. A five run second inning had Lake-Sumter off and running. Matt Coles pitched well through five innings allowing two earned runs in his outing. The Lakehawks picked up their fourth conference victory in the 6-3 win with Bryant Heston earning the save on the mound.

Through the first part of the Mid-Florida Conference, the Lakehawks are 4-2 and sitting in second place. The series between Lake-Sumter and FSCJ will continue Friday at 2 pm on the Leesburg Campus.
