Young Team Still Finding Their Way

Young Team Still Finding Their Way

Leesburg, Fla – It was a tough weekend for the Lake-Sumter State College baseball team who took on a pair of top teams from Region 8.

The new week got started with an 8-5 win over Warner JV on Tuesday. A four run second inning gave the pitching staff some breathing room moving forward. The Lakehawks added two more runs in the third and then a one run in both the fifth and sixth innings.

Pitching was solid for LSSC. Cameron Recny earned the win allowing just one hit over 2 2/3 innings pitched. Colby Woodard, Danny Pierce, Hunter Tinsley and Andrew Miele finished the game behind Recny and totaled nine strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings.

Conor McCormack and Seth Martin posted multi-hit games while Robbie Scott continued his hot start with two more RBIs.

Next up on the schedule was South Florida State on the road. A pitcher's duel ensued through the first six innings of play. Xavier Rodriguez was on the hill for Lake-Sumter and held the Panthers to just four hits and two runs over six innings of work.

In the sixth and seventh, LSSC managed to bring in three runs to take a 3-2 lead into the bottom half of the inning. SFS battled back with two runs of their own to take back the lead. The Panthers were able to hold onto it for two more innings, taking the game 4-3.

Martin collected two more hits while Collin Teegarden roped a double and came around to score.

On Friday, Lake-Sumter played host to Palm Beach State. Another low scoring affair took place that lasted just under two hours. Pitching was on key for both ball clubs. Fletcher Byrd went five innings giving up one earned run and striking out three. Kyle Wiseman and Recny came in behind him and combined for one unearned run and four strikeouts over four innings.

The offense could not string together hits to bring the runners around and PBSC took the game by a final score of 2-0. Byrd was the losing pitcher

Eastern Florida State arrived at the Hawks Nest on Saturday for a nine inning set against the Lakehawks. Two big innings for the Titans made the difference in the ball game. A three run third, followed by a five run fifth was too much to overcome for LSSC.

Martin, who had a great week at the plate, drove in the only two runs for Lake-Sumter with an RBI in the seventh and his second RBI in the ninth. Alan Alonso went 4 for 5 on the day scoring one of the two runs. Nick Labrada was tagged with the loss.

The final game of the week was a rematch against South Florida State. Both teams traded one run a piece in the first inning before the Panthers plated five runners in the third. LSSC managed to get three more runs on the board, but fell 8-4.

Angel Padilla went 3 for 4, including one double and two runs scored. Scott had one hit, an RBI and scored once in the loss. Woodard was the losing pitcher of record.

The Lakehawks are now 2-6 on the season and will host Indian River Wednesday afternoon. First pitched is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
