Lakehawks Making Noise Nationally

Lakehawks Making Noise Nationally

Leesburg, Fla. – Let the good times roll! This seems to be a theme lately for the Lake-Sumter State College volleyball team, coming off three straights wins, a national ranking and now a Player of the Week selection.

The NJCAA National Poll is released each Monday. Prior to this week's poll, the Lakehawks had failed to break the top 20. With the release of the fifth NJCAA DII volleyball rankings, Lake-Sumter comes in at No. 15 in the country. LSSC sits one spot ahead of conference foe, St. John's River State College at No. 16.

Adding to the excitement, came the announcement of Xiomara Williams as the Region 8 DII Player of the Week on Tuesday. Williams was a crucial part of the three wins last week. The Sophomore collected 40 digs, 35 kills and 13 service aces in nine sets.

"It's incredibly exciting to sit back and see our student-athletes be recognized for all their hard work they have put in so far this year," said Head Coach, Amanda Phelps. "It is incredibly hard to break the top 20 in the (National) poll. I think it just made our team even hungrier after seeing it in writing on the NJCAA website. This team wants it!"

When asked about Williams' selection, Coach Phelps added, "That was just the icing on the cake after a great week for the team. Xiomara is a cornerstone for this group. Her ceiling is so high and I'm not sure she even knows what she is capable of."

LSSC (6-1, 5-1) picks right back up with their conference schedule Wednesday against St. Petersburg College (1-8, 1-8) in Leesburg. The match is set for 6pm.
