Shenefield’s Perfect Game Lifts No. 17 Lakehawks to Sweep of Morton College

Shenefield’s Perfect Game Lifts No. 17 Lakehawks to Sweep of Morton College

LEESBURG, Fla. (Softball) – The Lake-Sumter State College (LSSC) softball team hosted Morton College on Sunday for a double header. The Lakehawks defeated the Panthers 8-0 and 2-1, including a perfect game on the mound by Ali Shenefield in game one.

Game One – Lake-Sumter 8, Morton College 0

The Lakehawk offense exploded in game one against Morton College. Lake-Sumter scored eight runs on eight hits while capitalizing on three Panther errors.

Reese Snipes and Alexis Adams both were 2-for-3 with two RBIs each. Raquel Camuglia also added a pair of RBIs after a two-run blast in the first inning, her sixth of the season.

Shenefield's perfect game marks the first in program history. In five innings, the Brooksville, Fla. native faced 15 batters, striking out 13.

Pitching coach Abbey Primavera had a unique take on Shenefield's outing Sunday afternoon, "It's ironic coaching my high school rival, but I wouldn't have it any other way. Being able to watch her (Shenefield) grow and over come her differences has been an honor.

"We both have been able to teach each other different aspects of pitching. I could not be prouder of everything she has already accomplished and what's to come in the future," said Coach Abbey.

Adding on to her historical performance, Shenefield recorded her eleventh win of the season to tie with Primavera for second all-time in single season wins. Her 13 strikeouts put her at 79 for the season making her fourth all-time for strikeouts in a single season.

Game Two – Lake-Sumter 2, Morton College 1

Game two was a much closer. The Lakehawks scored two runs on six hits while holding the Panthers to just one run on five hits.

The Lakehawks took a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Emily Gable reached on a base hit with one out, stole second and then scored on after the catcher overthrew the base on the steal.

Morton College tied the game up in the top of the fifth after a walk and a base hit.

In the bottom of the sixth, with the bases loaded, Desiree Romeo outran a force play at the plate to take the lead 2-1.

Kayley Williams and Elizabeth Auciello teamed up for the win on the mound. Williams pitched the first five innings, allowing just one run on four hits with three strikeouts.

Auciello threw the final two innings, allowing just one hit, no walks with one strikeout to earn the win. Auciello improved to 4-1 on the season.
