Lakehawk Softball Splits with Daytona State on Tuesday

LEESBURG, Fla. (Softball) – The Lake-Sumter State College (LSSC) softball team split a double header with Daytona State College (DSC) on Tuesday afternoon. The Lakehawks took game one 4-2 and the Falcons took game two 8-5.

Game One – Lake-Sumter 4 (10-7), Daytona State 2 (12-9)

Game one was a tight game throughout all seven innings, the first run not being scored until the fourth inning. With singles by Molly Bender, Raquel Camuglia, and Kreighton Steinke, the Lakehakws were able to manufacture their first run of the game.

With runners in scoring position now, Makenzi Heaton was able to send a ground ball to second base allowing Emily Gable, pinch running for Camuglia, to score giving the Lakehawks a 2-0 lead.

The Falcons remained scoreless until the top of the sixth inning. A pair of back-to-back lead off singles followed by a hit to left field scored two tying up the game.

The Lakehawks were able to answer back immediately in the bottom of the sixth. Reese Snipes reached on a single up the middle and Camuglia came next with an opposite field single.

Steinke stayed hot with her 20th single of the year to allow Snipes to score the go-ahead run and advance Camuglia to second. Darrian Pippin came up with a hard single up the middle to score Camuglia securing the Lakehawks' 4-2 decision over Daytona State.

Ali Shenfield earned the complete-game win allowing just two runs on five hits with no walks and seven strikeouts. Shenefield improved to a 6-0 record on the season.

Game Two – Lake-Sumter 5 (10-8), Daytona State 8 (13-9)

In game two, Snipes took the lead for Lake-Sumter with one big swing blasting a homerun to dead center field. The Lakehawks led 1-0 after the first inning.

The Falcons got a lead in the second inning after a leadoff hit-by-pitch followed by a single and a double to score both baserunners. DSC led 2-1 going into the bottom of the season.

Heaton recorded her first round tripper of the season with a deep solo shot to right center field to tie the game at 2-2 after two complete innings.

Daytona State took the lead back in after scoring five runs in the third. DSC's Amaiya Hernandez homered to center to score two which gave the Falcon offense enough momentum to take the lead 7-2 before Mia Lovett entered the game to relieve Pippin on the mound and record the final out.

The Lakehawks chipped away, scoring one in the fourth and two more in the fifth but back-to-back solo homeruns by Bender and Snipes proved not enough to overcome the Falcon lead.

With 2.2 innings pitched, Pippin recorded the loss on the mound moving to 4-2 on the season. Mia Lovett entered in relief for Pippin throwing 4.1 innings, allowing three runs on one hit and three walks.
