Pippin Delivers 1-Hitter in Win over SCF

Pippin Delivers 1-Hitter in Win over SCF

Leesburg, Fla. – It was a short week for the Lake-Sumter State College softball team, splitting a pair of double-headers, going 2-2 on the week.

The Lakehawks gave State College of Florida – Manatee-Sarasota all they could handle on the road Thursday night. After trailing 5-0 through the first two innings, the bats came alive to get LSSC back in the game. Trailing 7-5 in the top of the sixth, Raquel Camuglia hit a full-count two-run home run to tie the game up at 7-7. Neither team was able to score in the seventh, sending the contest into extra innings. Morgan Herndon was able to come around and score on a Camuglia sacrifice fly to start the eighth. The Manatees battled back in the bottom half and ended the game on a one out, two-run walk off home run.

Jeritza Montero was solid at the dish going 3 for 5 with a double and an RBI. Randa Motsinger had a big game as well collecting three hits and a walk on four trips to the plate. Amber Griffin suffered the loss for the Lakehawks after throwing 5 1/3 innings of solid relief.

Game two was all about the circle. Starting pitcher, Darian Pippin allowed one hit to the second batter in the second inning. It would be the only hit SCF would record for the remainder of the game.

Lake-Sumter broke the 0-0 tie in the top of the third on an RBI fielder's choice by Morgan Johnson. The offense was not done just yet boasting a five-run sixth inning and one more insurance run in the seventh. Pippin tossed a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh with the exclamation point being a game ending strikeout.

Pippin allowed just four runners to reach base in her complete game shutout while striking out five. Kreighton Steinke went 2 for 3 with two doubles and an RBI. Montero and Motsinger continued their offensive output with a triple and a double respectively. Makenzie Heaton notched two hits in the win as well.

On Saturday, the Lakehawks held their Breast Cancer Awareness Game against Miami Dade College. MDC was able to get an early lead and hold on to it in game one to grab the 11-3 victory.

The Lakehawk offense took their turn in game two driving in five runs between the second and fourth innings. A solid pitching performance from Alyssa Dragovich and 13 hits from her teammates led to an 8-3 victory.

Alyssa Opsahl and Montero tallied three hits each and combined for five RBI's.  Montero added two more doubles to her season total while Opsahl grabbed a two-bagger herself. Dragovich went 5 2/3 innings and allowed three runs before Jordyn Anderson tossed a scoreless sixth and seventh to end the ball game.

Lake-Sumter (16-14) will host Bryant & Stratton College out of Wisconsin Tuesday with game times set for 11 am and 1 pm.
