Bats Lead to Big Wins

Leesburg, Fla. – The Lake-Sumter State College baseball team is riding the wave of back-to-back wins led by the offense.

After a tough three-game skid, the Lakehawk baseball team got the ship back on track with a pair of victories in which the offense broke out for double-digit runs on both contests.

On Monday, the Community College of Baltimore County – Catonsville made the trip south to take on Lake-Sumter. It was a tightly contested 1-1 ball game through the first four innings of play. The Cardinals took a one run lead in the top half of the fifth before the Lakehawks took the lead right back with a three-run bottom of the fifth. The offenses opened up in the later innings for both teams with CCBC adding three in the seventh, while LSSC added two of their own with one in the sixth and another in the seventh. Heading into the eighth, Lake-Sumter was clinging to a one-run lead, 6-5. A four-run eighth gave the Lakehawks some breathing room. The LSSC bullpen gave up one run in the ninth, but secured the 10-6 win.

Chris Fergueson, Ryan Monaghan and Dannon Smith all collected three hits on the day. Monaghan drove a double to the gap, collecting two RBI's while scoring twice and added a walk to his stat line. Kendal Spencer went 0 for 1 with three walks and two RBI's. Ryan Brown got the start on the bump and allowed just one earned run through five innings of work. Evan Loeser earned the win with Nate Tinder coming in for the save.

Wednesday was a road trip for the Lakehawks against Embry-Riddle JV. The offense took control early to the tune of 14 runs through the first four innings of play. Collecting eight hits, seven RBI's and nine runs scored, the top four hitters in the lineup were on fire. Tinder went 3 for 5 with a double and two RBI's. Caleb Wood went the first four innings for LSSC giving up two earned runs and striking out four. Five pitchers combined to toss the final five innings with Dannon Smith picking up his first win of the year.
