Lakehawk Cross Country to Open the 2024 Season at UCF
CLERMONT, Fla. (Cross Country) – The Lake-Sumter State College (LSSC) men's and women's cross country teams have revealed their schedule for the 2024 regular season. The Lakehawks will compete in five regular season matches in preparation for post season competition in late October, early November.
The Lakehawks finished the 2023 season in Huntsville, Ala. at the 2023 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II Cross Country Championships. While the teams did not place, there was significant gain individually throughout the team.
Nine of the 14 Lakehawks competing recorded new personal records (PR). Seven of those student-athletes return for their second year on the team in hopes of returning to the national championship meet.
Returning sophomore Dylan Royal took second in the Lakehawk lineup with an 8,000-Meter (8K) time of 27:27.1, recording nearly a 90-second PR.
From the women's team, sophomore Demaris Soto was the top finisher for the Lakehawks posting a 5,000-Meter (5K) time of 23:24.0, also shy of a 90-second PR.
The Lakehawks will open the 2024 season Orlando, Fla. on Friday, Aug. 30 for the UCF Cross Country Invitational.
Lake-Sumter will have the opportunity to compete among the other two-year teams within the state of Florida including: College of Central Florida, Seminole State College, Daytona State College, Florida State College at Jacksonville, Pasco-Hernando State College, Florida Gateway College, and South Florida State College.
The 2024 Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA)/NJCAA Region 8 Cross Country Championships are set for Friday, October 25. The race will return to Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Fla.
From there, the teams will have the chance to travel for the 2024 NJCAA Division II Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships, which will be held at Pole Green Park in Richmond, Va. on Saturday, Nov. 9.
