Lakehawk Volleyball Picks Up Three Wins at Cape Fear Invite

WILMINGTON, N.C. (Volleyball) – The Lake-Sumter State College (LSSC) volleyball team traveled to Wilmington, N.C. over the weekend to compete in the Cape Fear Invitational at Cape Fear Community College (CFCC). The Lakehawks picked up three wins in their four matches played. 

Lake-Sumter 3, USC Union 0 (25-16, 25-9, 25-18)

Lake-Sumter faced the University of South Carolina Union (USC Union) in their first match of the tournament.

Yarelis Lopez Osorio posted a team-high seven kills for a .400 kill percentage. Kaylee Hunt followed Lopez with six kills.

Freshman setter Grace King recorded 13 assists with a pair of service aces. Jayden Ponsford recorded a career-high eight service aces for the match.  

Lake-Sumter 3, Spartanburg Methodist 0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-15)

The Lakehawks posted their second win of the weekend against Spartanburg Methodist.

Emily Warner posted 34 assists for the match while Lopez, Hunt, and Ponsford each recorded double-digit kills to secure the team win.

Additionally, five Lakehawks posted double-digit digs for the match: Lopez (16), Saniaa Dickey (14), Ponsford (13), Hunt (12), and Warner (11).

Lake-Sumter 1, Cape Fear 3 (27-25, 23-25, 13-25, 22-25)

Lake-Sumter's lone loss of the weekend came against Cape Fear. The Lakehawks took an exciting first set, 27-25, but the Sea Devils were able to take the following three sets for the win.

Hunt and Lopez had 11 kills each. Hunt recorded 15 digs with Dickey's 11.

King recorded 10 assists and eight digs while Warner had 25 with 11 digs.

Lake-Sumter 3, Walters State 2 (12-25, 25-23, 25-21, 21-25, 15-8)

In their final match of the tournament, the Lakehawks were able to pull out a five-set win over Walters State Community College.

Hunt recorded 12 kills with 22 digs, while Lopez had 11 kills with 14 digs. Sophomore middle Katelyn Johnson added 10 kills with six blocks, two solo.

King posted 29 assists and added 11 digs. Warner added 14 assists with nine digs.

Dickey recorded a career-high 30 digs in the match to earn a spot on the 2023 Region 8 25-dig club (see here).

With three wins for the weekend, the Lakehawks improve to 4-3 on the season headed into a new week.

The Lakehawks will host Hillsborough Community College on Friday, Sept. 1 at 1:00 p.m. Livestream video will be available to those who cannot attend.
