Lakehawks Move to No. 6 in Latest Region 8 Volleyball Coaches’ Poll

LEESBURG, Fla. (Volleyball) – The Lake-Sumter State College (LSSC) volleyball team had a very successful run capturing two out of three wins in their stretch of home games last week. The Lakehawks defeated Pensacola State, 3-1, and Andrew College, 3-0.

On the week, the Lakehawks hit .181 while recording 134 kills, 32 service aces, 24 blocks, and 193 digs.

In the latest Region 8 Volleyball Coaches' Poll, LSSC has moved up one spot from No. 7 to No. 6 in Division II receiving 52 points.

Lake-Sumter 3, Pensacola State 1

The Lakehawks secured a big conference win on Friday night taking down Pensacola State in four sets, 25-21, 25-21, 20-25, 25-18. As a team, they outhit the Pirates 52 kills to 46.

Outside Hitter Kaylee Hunt registered 11 kills and 15 digs, while Region 8 Offensive Player of the Week, Alyssa Guarino recorded 14 digs in the victory.

Yarelis Lopez Osario and Mackenzie Myers were also offensive standouts. Osario recorded 17 kills while Myers had 14.

Lake-Sumter 1, Gulf Coast State 3

On Saturday, LSSC fought hard against a strong offensive lineup from Gulf Coast State falling short three sets to one.

LSSC jumped on the Commodores quick with a 25-23 set win. The team racked up 17 kills for a .333 kill percentage. Gulf Coast State answered back in the second set with a 25-12 win.

The Lakehawks kept set three close the battling with the Commodores back and forth, forcing the set to go extra. They ultimately fell short 28-26.

In the fourth set, the Lakehawks continued to put pressure on the Gulf Coast defense. As the Commodores were nearing the 25-point mark, the Lakehawks had a six-point rally, but fell short for the third time 25-22.

Lopez Osario was once again an influential part of the Lakehawk offense and defense registering 12 kills and 12 digs. Three more Lakehawks had their defense up recording double digit digs. Hunt had 14, Guarino had 28 and Cameron Bendel had 11.

Lake-Sumter 3, Andrew College 0

In their third match of the week, the Lakehawks swept visiting Andrew College in three sets, 25-9, 25-19, 25-16. The team hit .250 for the match with 35 kills, 15 service aces and added 26 digs and six blocks.

Hunt registered eight kills, Sheyenne Kimpel had seven, Katie Patrick had six and Allie Cox and Megan Connolly each had five.

The Lakehawks move to 7-8 on the season and 3-5 in conference play.
