LSSC Invitational a Success

LSSC Invitational a Success

Leesburg, Fla. – The 2022 regular season is in full force for the Lake-Sumter State College volleyball program with 4 of their 6 matches coming against nationally ranked opponents.

Wednesday marked the first road match of the season for LSSC as they traveled to Gainesville to take on NJCAA DI affiliate, Santa Fe College. The Lakehawks jumped out in front taking the first set, 25-17, before falling in the next three consecutive sets (25-23, 28-26, 25-23). LSSC put up an incredible battle, even forcing extra points in the third set.

The Lake-Sumter Invitational took place over the weekend with matches beginning on Friday and ending in the afternoon on Saturday. LSSC played host to Cape Fear Community College (NC) in their only match on day one. CFCC came into the weekend ranked No. 13 in the country. The Lakehawks were able to sweep the match in three sets (25-19, 25-23, 25-22).

Saturday morning had the toughest opponent the Lakehawks had seen since the National Tournament last season, Cowley County Community College (KS). Preseason No. 2 in the nation. The Tigers showed why they received that ranking, winning the match in three sets (25-16, 25-23, 25-14).

The second half of the day saw Lake-Sumter put on a display of their own against Enterprise State Community College (AL). Recovering from their earlier loss, the team looked poised to bounce back. Again, LSSC was able to win and take the match in the first three sets (25-18, 25-8, 25-17).

Once the weekend was finally completed, LSSC found themselves with a 3-3 overall record, with their losses coming at the hands of two NJCAA DI affiliates (one being No. 16) and the No. 2 team in the country in DII (CCCC). Their victories include two top 20 programs in the nation.

It has been a quick acclimation period for the very young Lakehawk volleyball team as they head into Sun-Lake Conference play this week. The conference home opener will be Thursday at 6 pm against Palm Beach State College. LSSC will be right back at on the Leesburg Campus Saturday to take on South Florida State College at 1 pm.
