Leesburg, Fla. – The first week of conference play is in the books and the Lake-Sumter State College volleyball team is 1-1.
Lake-Sumter is starting the Sun-Lakes conference schedule a little different than last year. Unlike the 2018 season, when the Lakehawks were just another team, this year the team began ranked No. 15 in the nation in the first NJCAA poll.
A trip to Palatka kicked off conference play against St. John's River State College. After a week off from playing outside competition, the Lakehawks came out rusty. The Vikings were able to easily grab the first two sets by scores of 25-17 and 25-20. Set three saw LSSC turn it on showing flashes of their talent taking a 19-17 lead, but could not hold it down the stretch and fell, 25-22.
Skyler Martin led the way with nine kills and three block assists. Hannah Yarbough was able to collect 16 digs while Joalys Nunez totaled eight kills and 11 digs on the night.
The home opener against Florida Gateway College came Friday. After a close first set where the Lakehawks pulled off the 25-21 victory, the team then went on to show their real ability on the court. The next two sets were very one sided with LSSC taking home the 25-15 win in set two and then coming out on top 25-7 to finish off the sweep.
The victory was a total team effort hitting .253 as a whole in the match. Yarbrough matched her season high with 25 digs. Aleisha Marcano hit .429 with six kills alongside Talyn Allard who boasted a season high, nine points.
Back on the road for their next contest, the Lakehawks will head to South Florida State College Wednesday. South Florida is currently 0-2 in Sun-Lakes Conference play having lost to Pasco-Hernando and Gulf Coast. Game time will be 6 pm.
