Fyffe, Smith, Wells Qualify for Nationals at Embry-Riddle
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Track & Field) – The Lake-Sumter State College track & field teams competed at the Embry-Riddle Running Elements Classic over the weekend. Standout performances include Mark Fyffe, Oksanna Smith, and Kenyon Wells becoming the first three Lakeahwks to qualify for the 2025 NJCAA Championships in May.
Fyffe displayed an electric performance in the Long Jump becoming the first Lakehawk from the men's team in program history to qualify for outdoor nationals. Fyffe's mark of 7.50m was good for a first-place finish in the event and currently ranks second nationally.
On Saturday afternoon, Smith competed in the 400m Hurdles to become the second Lakehawk to qualify for nationals and the first in program history from the women's team. She took fifth overall in the event with a time of 1:04.43.
"Oksanna's hard work and dedication have paid off in a big way. Qualifying for national is a huge accomplishment and shows just how much potential she has," said Head Coach Cristy Snellgroves.
At this time, Smith ranks 13th nationally in the 400m Hurdles.
After Smith, Wells also qualified for nationals in the 400m Hurdles. With a time of 53.81, he finished fourth overall in the event.
At this time, Wells now ranks ninth nationally in the event.
"Kenyon continues to impress. He has been working so hard and his improvement has been phenomenal," said Coach Snellgroves.
Overall, the men's team earned 15 points to finish 16th of 28 teams. The women's team earned 14.5 points taking 14th of 29 teams in competition.
"This meet represented a significant advancement for our program, and we are eager to build upon this momentum as we continue to strive for future achievements. We are just getting started and I am excited to see where our team goes from here," said Coach Snellgroves.
The teams will be back on the track next weekend in a familiar place at the Orlando Health-National Training Center Track located in Clermont, Fla. The Lakehawks are set to compete at the PURE Athletics Spring Elite Meet on Saturday, Apr. 12.
