Lakehawk Track & Field Makes Statement at UCF Black & Gold Meet
OVIEDO, Fla. (Track & Field) – The Lake-Sumter State College (LSSC) track & field delivered another standout performance over the weekend at the UCF Black & Gold Invitational. Competing as the only NJCAA member school in a field of entirely NCAA programs, the Lakehawks went head-to-head with the country's top talent.
Sophomore William Petersen led the charge in the 800m, setting a new personal record (PR) of 1:57.43. Petersen now ranks 8th nationally in the event with his performance.
In the women's 400m, Oksanna Smith continued her streak of sub-60 performances, finishing 59.76. Kenyon Wells clocked a time of 50.35 in the men's 400m.
Freshman sprinter Devonte Hanson inked a new school record in his outdoor debut with a time of 11.08 in the 100m dash.
The Lakehawks' 4x400m relay team of Mark Fyffe, Kenyon Wells, Chris Morinvil, and Dontae Morris placed 12th and shattered the previous school record with a time of 3:17.00. Their performance ranks 5th in NJCAA Division I and notably just one second off from the qualifying standard for the outdoor championships in May.
"To step onto the track as the only NJCAA team and compete stride for stride with NCAA programs speaks volumes about the level of talent and heart on this team."
"We are proud of the personal bests and national rankings, but even more proud of how our athletes carry themselves and rise to the challenge," said Head Coach Cristy Snellgroves.
The Lakehawks take the week to train before returning to competition next weekend in Tallahassee, Fla. at the FSU Relays.
