Lakehawk Track & Field’s Aguilar and Vega Ramos Achieve Personal Bests at Puerto Rican Championships
MAYAGUEZ, P.R. (Track & Field) – Two track & field student-athletes from Lake-Sumter State College (LSSC) excelled at the Puerto Rican Championships, held at Estadio Jose A. Figueroa Freyre. Despite the rain and storms on the first day, which led to event postponements, both athletes achieved personal best times in their respective events.
Sophomore Santos Aguilar's event was rescheduled to Saturday, moving all athletes straight to the finals. He ran the 800m in 1:53.62, finishing fifth in the senior division.
Aguilar ran a strategic race against a field of world-class and talented athletes in his first international race. With his potential still untapped, he is expected to have many great races ahead as a student leader going into Lakehawk Track & Field's second season.
Incoming freshman Darwin Vega Ramos competed in the 400m hurdles, achieving a personal best of 59.13 seconds.
In a thrilling finish, Vega Ramos secured the bronze medal in the 18–19-year-old division by just 0.05 seconds. His strategic and smart racing showcased his immense talent and potential.
Lakehawk Track & Field is excited to welcome Ramos to the team for the 2024-25 season.
The LSSC track & field program is grateful for the support from the Puerto Rican Federation and leadership from FAPUR, especially Luis Dieppa, President of FAPUR, and Felix Diaz, Puerto Rican National Coach. Coach Diaz provided guidance, support, and made the trip possible, going above and beyond in his efforts.
We are proud that our student-athletes were able to represent Puerto Rico, and it is because of their dedication and the support of these leaders. These performances highlight the promising future of LSSC's track & field program.
