Lakehawk Athletics Displays Outstanding Academic Success in 2023-24
As an athletic department, the cumulative grade point average (GPA) of all 10 teams came out to 3.32
LEESBURG, Fla. (Athletics) – Lake-Sumter State College (LSSC) athletics wrapped up a successful 2023-24 year in late May with several district and national championship contenders. Additionally, the Lakehawks displayed success in the classroom to accompany their success on the field.
As an athletic department, the cumulative grade point average (GPA) of all 10 teams came out to 3.32, improving from a 3.06 department GPA in 2022-23.
Overall, eight out of 10 teams recorded over a 3.00 with five student-athletes recording a 4.00 GPA.
Executive Director of Athletics, Padraic McMeel, finishing up his first season with the Lakehawks, shared his thoughts on the academic year, "I am incredibly proud of our student-athletes and their success in the classroom. Their drive to be successful both academically and athletically is truly inspiring.
"They continue to strive for excellence and are tremendous ambassadors for LSSC, the athletics department, and their teams," said McMeel.
Below are the final GPAs for each Lakehawk team.

Men's Cross Country – 3.22
Women's Cross Country – 3.04
Softball – 3.21
Men's Track & Field, Indoor – 3.14
Men's Track & Field, Outdoor – 3.14
Women's Track & Field, Indoor – 2.96
Women's Track & Field, Outdoor – 2.84
Volleyball – 3.31
"I am so proud of each of our student-athletes for their achievements in the classroom and in competition this season," said Dr. Heather Bigard, President of Lake-Sumter State College.
"Their hard work and dedication is a tribute to their passion. Our athletics program makes an intentional effort to develop well-rounded individuals that will thrive in their future careers and make an impact on our community."
The Florida College System Athletic Association (FCSAA) and the NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association) will be announcing their respective academic awards in the coming weeks for both individuals and teams.
