No. 17 Lakehawks Take Two on the Road

No. 17 Lakehawks Take Two on the Road

Leesburg, Fla. – The Lake-Sumter State College volleyball program entered the week No. 17 in the latest NJCAA national poll and took care of business going 2-0 against South Florida State College and Palm Beach State College.

After back-to-back home matches, the Lakehawks hit the road to face off against South Florida (7-11, 6-10) on Wednesday. LSSC didn't wait long to flex their No. 17 muscles winning in three straight sets (25-20, 25-21, 25-16).

Kayla Chambliss dished out 47 assists on the night, matching her season high. She has reached the 47 assists plateau two other times in 2021. Xiomara Williams and Emma Rome both found themselves with a double-double by the end of the night. Williams collected 17 kills with 10 digs while Rome added 12 kills to go along with 11 digs.

Match number two of the week was again on the road, but this time it was Head Coach, Amanda Phelps' old stomping grounds in Palm Beach. The Royal Palm Beach High School Alum had her team prepared for the Panthers. The two teams battled to a split after the first two sets, before the Lakehawks took control and won the final two sets (25-21, 25-16).

Chambliss added 31 more assists to her season and career totals Saturday night, putting her third on the all-time list. Rome put together another solid performance with 15 digs and 12 kills. Madison Heskett hit .375 on the night when attacking and ended with 10 kills.

The Lakehawks are now 18-4 overall and 13-3 in the Sun-Lakes Conference. The team's 18 wins are the most in the program since 2003 when they went 22-11 under Steve Benson. When it comes to the Sun-Lakes Conference, LSSC sits second in the standings behind No. 9 St. John's River State College with just two conference matches remaining in the regular season. The Lakehawks have clinched a spot in the regional tournament, but the final seeding is still up for grabs.

All three of the remaining regular season contests will be at home for the Lakehawks. They will begin the final stretch with non-conference opponent, Hillsborough Community College (11-6) Tuesday night at 6 pm.
