Lakehawks Go 4-1 in North Carolina

Hickory, NC – After a tough loss to St. John's River State College, the Lake-Sumter State College volleyball team got back on track going 4-1 at the Catawba Valley Invitational in Hickory, NC.

The Lakehawks opened up against 8-5 Catawba Valley CC (NC) on Thursday to start the Invitational. It was a five-set battle between the two programs. LSSC dropped the first set, 25-23, before taking control of sets two and three by scores of 25-10 and 25-11. The Red Hawks snatched the fourth set, 25-23, pushing a fifth and final set for the match. A solid run to open the final set gave the Lakehawks some breathing room and the eventual 15-8 win.

Friday put the Lakehawks against Spartanburg Methodist College (SC). The Pioneers entered the match 20-5 on the season and showed why, winning the first two sets (25-20, 25-23). LSSC battled back to take the third set 25-20, but would fall in the fourth set, 25-21. It would be the only loss during the trip.

The second match of the day was against the 7-6 Walters State CC (TN) Senators. WSCC jumped out to an early lead in the first set and never let up, ending with the 25-19 win. Lake-Sumter quickly turned it around winning the next three sets (25-21, 25-23, 25-22) and the match.

A nine hour trip Wednesday, followed by three matches over the next two days had the Lakehawks exhausted come Saturday morning, with two matches remaining. The team rallied around each other taking home two victories. Lake-Sumter handed Cape Fear CC (NC) just their third loss of the season in four sets. Lurleen B. Wallace CC (AL) was the final match of the Invitational. LSSC was able to win in three straight sets (25-12, 25-21, 25-17).

Now, back in the state of Florida, Lakehawk volleyball (13-4, 8-3) will get right back to work in the Sun Lakes Conference against Pasco-Hernando State College (5-10, 4-7) Wednesday. It will be the second meeting of the season between the two programs. The first match was a 3-1 victory in Leesburg. Wednesday's match will begin at 6 pm in New Port Richey, FL.
