Lakehawks Take Down Panthers

Leesburg, Fla. – The Lake-Sumter State College volleyball team makes it back-to-back wins for the first time this season after taking down South Florida State College Wednesday.

Going into the contest, The Panthers were two games ahead of the Lakehawks in the standings, sitting in third place. St. John's River State College and Gulf Coast State College reside in the one and two spots respectively.

It was a tight first set out of the gate for these two teams. Both executed their offenses and were out to set the tone. Solid defense for the Lakehawks allowed them to take a lead in extra points and hold onto it for the 27-25 win. Capitalizing on the momentum from the first set, Lake-Sumter jumped out to an early lead and took set two, 25-19.

Not wanting to go out so easy, South Florida got right back into the match with a 25-20 win in set three. Set four was as tightly contested as the first set, but again, the Lakehawks came out on top, 25-23, to win the match.

Joalys Nunez had a night to remember. The freshman posted a double-double with 15 kills, 22 digs and three blocks. Hannah Yarbrough matched her teammate with 22 digs of her own to go along with three assists and two aces. Outside of Nunez, three other Lakehawks finished with double digit kills including Skyler Martin (12), Aleisha Marcano (11) and Hailey Franklin (10). Kelsie Savage and Nareliz Medina were dishing out assists like it was an all-you-can-eat assist buffet. Medina finished with 31 while Savage ended the night with 26.

"It's the right time to be playing some of the best volleyball we have played all season," said acting Head Coach, Nate Camnitz. "It was a total team effort in this one and with three conference games left in the regular season, we expect to peak heading into the tournament."

Lake-Sumter (4-8, 3-4) are currently sitting in fourth place in the Sun-Lakes Conference standings. They will meet up with Gulf Coast State College (16-4, 5-1) Friday afternoon in Leesburg. In their first meeting, GC defeated the Lakehawks in three sets. Game time is 6 pm.
