Sun-Lakes Conference Opener Wednesday

Leesburg, Fla.  – After a week hiatus from the court, the Lake-Sumter State College volleyball team is ready to get the Sun-Lakes Conference schedule started on Wednesday.

Although hurricane Dorian did not make direct landfall into the central Florida region, it still caused enough problems to cancel the Lakehawks five matches set for last week. LSSC has one of the toughest nonconference schedules in the state to get them ready for conference play and missing an entire week was not in the plans. "It's always tough to have a stop-n-go start to the season," said acting Head Coach, Nate Camnitz. "We work really hard in practice and battle every day, so pressure situations shouldn't be too hard to get back into when we play someone else tomorrow."

The Lakehawks will be Palatka bound Wednesday to take on St. John's River State College in the conference opener. The Vikings finished third in the regular season standings last season with a 22-11, 6-4 record. St. John's, a top 20 program to begin the 2018 season, dropped both matches to the Lakehawks, 3-1 and 3-0. The two teams met again in the final four of the Regional/District Tournament with LSSC winning the match in five sets.

"Every game during the season is important, but this is the point in the season where we start figuring out where everyone stands in the conference and what we need to work on for the state tournament," Camnitz said. Last season, the Lakehawks were the Cinderella story having not posted a winning season since 2003 and then proceed to go out and win the District championship, finishing 11th in the nation. "This conference is very good and we're all excited to get this part of the season going."

The match is set for a 6 pm start time.
