Hernandez, Berecz and Gray Sweep Weekly Awards

Hernandez, Berecz and Gray Sweep Weekly Awards

Tallahassee, Fla. – After going 2-0 last week to begin conference play, the Lake-Sumter State College volleyball team swept the weekly awards for the first time in program history.

NJCAA  Division II Region 8 selects three award winners each week for outstanding play. A Setter of the Week, Defensive Player of the Week and all-around Player of the Week are all recognized.

Gabriela Hernandez made history in the Lakehawks two matches last week. The setter posted a 53 assist contest in match one. The first 50+ assist match since 2013. Hernandez followed that up with another 53 assist performance against Florida Gateway College. Her 106 total assists in consecutive games is the most in recorded history of Lake-Sumter volleyball. Hernandez's performance earned her Setter of the Week honors.

The 25 Dig Club welcomed a new member after Amanda Berecz performance against No. 18 St. John's River. A career high 25 digs helped her team to a 4-1 victory over the nationally ranked Vikings. Berecz continues to have a stellar sophomore campaign averaging 4.3 digs per set on the season. In two matches last week, Berecz averaged 5.25 digs per set, helping her earn the Setter of the Week selection.

Emma Gray is having a season for the ages in 2018. The Fruitland Park native is following up a year where she was selected All-Conference, with an even better sophomore campaign. Gray notched double-double performances in both wins last week totaling 38 points and 31 digs. The outside hitter's all-around impact on the court was the main reason she was selected as the Region 8 Player of the Week.

"It's amazing to get this kind of regional representation from our program," said Head Coach, Amanda Phelps. "These girls have worked their tails off on the court and it is just awesome for them and for our whole team to be recognized for it."

LSSC will head to South Florida State College Wednesday for another Sun-Lakes Conference matchup. The contest is set for a 6 pm start time.
