Lakehawks Improve to 2-0 in Conference Play

Lake City, Fla. – Starting out in the right direction in conference is very important and the Lake-Sumter State College volleyball program has done just that after improving to 2-0 in a 3-1 victory over Florida Gateway College.

Unlike previous matches, the Lakehawks fell behind early in a brutal first set that saw several lead changes. The Wolves prevailed at the end of set one by a score of 28-26.

An early lead in set two gave LSSC some breathing room enabling them to knot the match up at 1-1 with a 25-21 win. Set three was again a tightly contested battle that went back and forth several times. Neither team was able to pull away, until back-to-back points gave Lake-Sumter the set, 26-24.

The fourth and final set of the match put LSSC's talent on full display. Emma Gray and the offense were able to take control early on, creating separation and opportunities for points. A 25-16 win secured the match for the Lakehawks.

Gabriela Hernandez posted her second consecutive 50+ assist match with 53 on the night to go along with a team high 21 digs. Gray added 20 digs of her own and 19 points, while Talyn Allard also completed the double-double with 16 kills and 13 digs.

"I'm proud of the work our team is putting in at practice," said Head Coach, Amanda Phelps. "I think they have really bought in to our system and it's showing on the court. This new conference is very evenly matched; each game is going to be a battle. We've got a long road ahead of us, but I believe this group is up to the challenge!"

Improving to 5-5 overall, Lake-Sumter is more importantly 2-0 in the Sun-Lakes Conference. Currently, the Lakehawks and No. 6 Pasco-Hernando are the only remaining unbeaten teams in the conference. The two teams will not meet up until Sept. 26. Next on the schedule for LSSC will be South Florida State College (3-4, 1-1) on the road Wednesday. Start time for the contest is slated for 6 pm.
