Volleyball Coming Off Back-to-Back Wins

Leesburg, Fla. – The Lake-Sumter State College volleyball team took home two wins over the weekend, defeating Trinity College (3-0) and Florida National (3-2). Both are four year institutions.

Coming off of a heartbreaking five set loss to Eastern Florida Thursday, the Lakehawks rebounded for two solid wins on Saturday. The opening match was against Trinity College and LSSC hit the ground running taking the first set 25-15. Wasting no time, the Lakehawks did not give up a set, winning the next two by scores of 25-23 and 25-15.

Dallas Patterson led the way leading the team with eight points. Nia Ervin and Emma Gray finished closely behind with seven points each. Gabriella Hernandez and Renata Gomes Martin boasted double digit assists with 11 and 15 respectfully. Gomes Martin finished with a double-double tacking on 10 digs by the end of the match.

Match number two of the day pitted LSSC against Florida National University. It was a hard fought battle that went the distance for five sets. The teams went back and forth with FNU sneaking by in the fourth set, 28-26. Ervin was dominant down the stretch scoring several key points allowing her team the take the fifth and final set, 18-16.

Taysha Gonzalez notched a season high 43 digs, putting her over 400 on the year. The freshman currently leads the state of Florida and is top 20 in the nation with 416 total digs. Last week marked the third time this season Gonzalez joined the 25 dig club.

"I loved how the girls bounced back from a tough loss on Thursday to get the wins on Saturday," said Head Coach, Amanda Phelps. "It shows the resiliency of our girls and the direction we are headed in. We still have some work to do, but the foundation is being put down."

Lake-Sumter will play host to Central Florida Tuesday night for a 7 pm start time. It will be a special night for six sophomores as they will be playing in their final home contest.
