Volleyball Making Noise in Region 8

Volleyball Making Noise in Region 8

Leesburg, Fla. – After a slow start to the season, thing are picking up for the Lake-Sumter State College volleyball team.

The team entered the weekend with a 1-7 record and were coming off of a long break due to hurricane Irma. LSSC hit the court with vengeance defeating former conference foe, Santa Fe College in five sets. Since 2013, the Lakehawks had not been able to take a single set from the Saints, let alone win a match. That all changed Saturday.

Santa Fe took the opening set before LSSC grabbed control of the match winning back to back sets. An exhilarating fourth set saw the Saints tie it up at two sets a piece after grabbing the frame 26-24 and sending the contest to a 5th and final set. Emma Gray and Nia Ervin provided the spark down the stretch helping the Lakehawks win the set (16-14) and the match (3-2).

"It was a big victory for our team and the biggest one I have been a part of since I started here," said Head Coach, Amanda Phelps. "I hope our girls see what we can be and what they are fully capable of."

The victory opened some eyes around Region 8 with the Lakehawks receiving a vote as one of the top teams in the state of Florida. Two LSSC standouts also received accolades with Sierra Mooney and Taysha Gonzalez being selected as Region 8 Player of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week, respectfully.

LSSC (2-8) opens conference play this week with No. 11 Daytona State (11-2) Tuesday in Leesburg.
