Pitching Leads Lakehawks to Four Wins

Leesburg, Fla. – A little change of pace for the Lake-Sumter State College softball team as their pitching staff took the lead this past week, helping their team to four straight victories.

Lake-Sumter headed to Polk State College Thursday for a pair of games under the lights in Winter Haven. Jordyn Anderson got the start and did not give up a hit until the bottom of the fifth inning. It was the top of the sixth when the Lakehawks did their damage with five runs on three hits, including an RBI double by Summer Cowen. The Falcons came back with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. A two out double by Alyssa Dragovich gave her team a 6-2 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. Mia Lovett came out of the bullpen to relieve Anderson and faced four batters, allowed one runner to reach before securing the victory for her team.

Morgan Johnson and Alyssa Opsahl both notched multi-hit performances while Anderson tossed six strong innings to get the win, moving her record to 4-0 on the season.

Game two was all about the pitching. The Lakehawk offense did what they had to do by scraping one run across the plate in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings. Dragovich was in control from the first pitch on, allowing only five runners to reach in seven innings. The righty needed just 84 pitches for the complete game shutout.

Kierston Smith led the way with a three-hit night. Desiree Romeo continues to make an impact with her legs, collecting three stolen bases and a run.

The offense came through in game one of the double header Saturday against Florida State College – Jacksonville. Heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, the Lakehawks and the Blue Wave were knotted up at six all. Raquel Camuglia shot a ball back up the middle to score Romeo from third for the walk-off victory. Lovett, who relieved Darian Pippin in the sixth inning, walked away with the win.

Game two started off fast with both teams scoring one run each in the first. Amber Griffin, the Lakehawks starting pitcher, settled in to start the second inning and would only allow one more run through the next six. LSSC brought around four more runs between the second inning and the fourth to go up 5-1. The Blue Wave were able to get one more across before Griffin closed the door in the sixth and seventh.

The Georgia native boasted a season high five strikeouts while giving up just one earned run. Jordan Noble and Johnson both managed three hits in the ball game while Randa Motsinger went 2 for 3 on the day.

Lake-Sumter (11-3) will head to Hillsborough Community College (4-7) Tuesday for a double header in Tampa. Game one is set for 4 pm.
