Lakehawks Gear Up for Conference

Leesburg, Fla. – With the regular season complete, the Lake-Sumter State College softball team will turn their attention to the Mid-Florida Conference schedule that begins Saturday.

With a 17-15 record, offense has been the name of the game so far this season for LSSC. Alyssa Woolums leads the team with a .453 batting average, good enough for 15th in the state. The freshman has split time between second base and behind the plate carrying a .961 fielding percentage. Casey Allen continues a solid sophomore campaign with a team leading 43 hits, including nine doubles, two triples and a home run.

Another freshman who has been making a name for herself is Emily Kolwicz. After moving from second base to left field, Kolwicz has taken off with a .388 batting average and a team leading 16 walks. Jennifer Bryant continues to be a feature in the middle of the lineup hitting .404 with 40 hits and stellar defense at the hot corner.

The biggest difference in this year's offense has been the addition of the big bats driving the ball over the fence. Shortstop, Genesis Aviles has five home runs to her credit along with a team high 11 doubles. The Montverde graduate is also tied with Allen in RBI's with 24. Transfer, Nicole Smith has four home runs under her belt while Kierstyn Kohlmaier has two.

The team as a whole is hitting .346 with 58 doubles and 15 home runs, already surpassing the home run total from 2019.

In the circle, Brandi Davis has established herself as one of the best pitchers in the state. Her 8-3 record is tied for 11th best in Region 8. In 55 innings pitched, Davis has posted a 3.18 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP. Cissy Doolittle has made her presence felt recently with two wins in her last two starts while striking out nine over 13 innings of work and allowing just two earned runs. Kayla Reichardt and Sarah Grindrod have both collected three wins a piece this season.

First up on the conference schedule is the No. 2 team in the latest NJCAA poll, Central Florida. The Patriots are currently 26-1. Lake-Sumter will host CF Saturday for double-header action beginning at 1 pm.
