Geier Collects Two Wins on the Week

Leesburg, Fla. – Six games in three days made for a very busy schedule for the Lake-Sumter State College softball team this past week.

St. Pete College made the trip up to Leesburg to take on the Lakehawks in a double header on Thursday. The Titans kept the bats silent for Lake-Sumter in game one, resulting in a 5-1 loss. Game two was a back and forth battle that ended up suspended due to darkness. The game will resume in St. Petersburg later this month. It will pick up in the eighth inning, tied at 5-5.

After splitting a double header earlier this season, Polk State arrived Friday to complete the home/away series. The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday, but was moved due to weather concerns. Lake-Sumter managed just five hits in the 3-0 loss. LSSC bounced back in game two, breaking out for 12 hits in nine innings. Tied 7-7 after the seventh, the game headed into extras. Both team's managed a run in the eighth. The Eagles brought another runner around in the ninth to go up 9-8. Jenna Curtis began the bottom half of the inning on second base. Allie Geier then put down a bunt that stopped moving on top of home plate for a single. Ashlyn Allen came to the plate and drove a double into the left center gap, bringing in Curtis as well as Geier all the way around from first for the 10-9 walk-off win. For Geier, it was her first win in the circle this season as she was the pitcher of record.

Saturday marked contests five and six in the long three day stretch of games. Back on the road, the Lakehawks headed to Pasco-Hernando for a two game set. The Bobcats knocked off Lake-Sumter 5-1 in game one. It was game two when LSSC really opened up their offense to the tune of 10 runs on 14 hits. The game ended after six innings due to run rule. Mackenzie Reeves was 2 for 4 with a double, a home run and four RBI's. Nini Underwood was 4 for 5 on the day with a stolen base and two RBI's of her own. Casey Allen and Jennifer Bryant notched three hits apiece. Geier collected her second win in two days going all six innings, allowing one earned run in the 10-1 victory.

"We are really starting to get our bats going for the first time this season," said Head Softball Coach, Jay Miller. "Our pitching has been there since day one, our defense has been consistent and now we are bringing the bats along with us. We are headed in the right direction at the right time."

Lake-Sumter (8-10) will head to Bradenton Tuesday to take on State College of Florida-Manatee. They will begin playing their suspended game in the fifth inning before starting a normal two game set. Start time is scheduled for 4 pm.
