Lakehawks Stumble in Weekend Series

Leesburg, Fla. – The Lake-Sumter State College softball program went 1-3 over the weekend bringing their season record to 4-4.

With the season opener in the books, the Lakehawks went down to Lakeland to take on Polk State in a double header on Thursday afternoon.

Jumping out to a three run lead in the top of the first, LSSC gave their starting pitcher some early breathing room. The offense would add two more runs along the way, with one in the fourth inning and then one more again in the seventh. Abbey Primavera tossed five innings allowing just two hits and two runs. Primavera gave way to Allie Geier in the sixth who shut the door with six up and six down over the final two innings to secure the team's 5-2 win.

Game two saw Polk jump out to a 7-1 lead after two innings. It was a  four run fifth inning that got the Lakehawks back into the ball game. Taylor Turner managed to score from third on a passed ball to tie the game at 7-7 in the top of the sixth inning. The Eagles were able to plate one run in the bottom half of the inning to go back up 8-7. Lake-Sumter was unable to bring a run around to score in the seventh, ending their chances for a second comeback.

Friday marked the second home date of the young season for the Lakehawks as they played host to South Florida State. Game one was a pitcher's duel all the way through until the end. Geier took to the circle for LSSC and went 6 1/3 innings giving up four hits while striking out five. It was in the top of the seventh when the SFSC broke through with the first three runs of the contest. The Lake-Sumter offense was unable to muster any runs in the seventh to fall, 3-0.

Game two was a hit-a-thon totaling 14 runs on 20 hits. However, the Lakehawks were on the wrong side of the scoring totals, 11-3.

Jennifer Bryant collected three hits on the weekend, including two home runs and five RBIs. Casey Allen continues to look good at the plate hitting .346 on the season with five runs scored. Primavera brings her season record to 3-0 to go along with her microscopic 1.16 ERA and 0.94 WHIP.

This week, Lake-Sumter will take on South Florida for games 3 and 4 of their four game series on Tuesday in Avon Park, FL. Pitch pitch slated for 4 pm. The team will return home Thursday to face off against State College of Florida – Manatee with start time scheduled for 2 and 4.
