Leesburg, Fla. – The Lake-Sumter State College baseball team has released its schedule for the upcoming 2020 spring season.
Opening day is right around the corner in just a few short weeks. The Lakehawks will open up at home against Warner University JV Friday, January 24. It will be a single, nine inning contest at the HawksNest.
Mid-Florida Conference play begins Monday, March 2 in Leesburg against St. John's River State College. In 2019, LSSC went 1-3 in the series against the Vikings who finished one slot above the Lakehawks in the final standings.
The season will come to an end on the road in Gainesville with Lake-Sumter taking on Santa Fe College. The Saints finished second in the MFC last season with a 38-17 overall record. Post season implications could be on the line on the final day of the regular season.
"We play in one of the best regions in the country," said Head Coach, Rich Billings. "It doesn't matter if it is a conference game or not, each day we take the field is going to be a battle. We will go up against some of the best talent in the country day in and day out." He went on to say, "Our group of guys are ready for this grind and they are excited for this season and the opportunities it brings."
Coach Billings is currently tied with legendary Lake-Sumter Athletic Director and former baseball coach, Mike Matulia in wins at LSSC. Both coaches have totaled 178 wins and have done it in almost the exact same amount of games. It took Coach Matulia 422 games to reach 178 wins and it took Coach Billings 421 games to reach the mark. Coach Billings will become Lake-Sumter's all-time winningest coach with his next victory.
