Lakehawks Take Conference Opener from Vikings

Lakehawks Take Conference Opener from Vikings

Leesburg, Fla. – Mid-Florida Conference play is well underway and the Lake-Sumter State College baseball team got off to a very good start against St. John's River State.

Game 1 of the 3 game series started like a normal pitcher's duel and it quickly changed direction in the third inning. The Lakehawks added three runs in the third and then five in the fourth to take a commanding 8-2 lead after five innings.

The Vikings weren't going away any time soon. St. John's plated seven runs over the next two innings. LSSC was able to get just one of those runs back in the sixth, tying the game up at 9-9.

After 18 runs were scored between the two teams, the bats went silent from the seventh inning until the final run was plated in the 11th. Robbie Scott got the inning going with a leadoff double into right field. Seth Martin was able to get a ground ball to the right side and move Scott over to third. With two down, Scott scampered home on a wild pitch to give his team a one run lead.

Kyle Wiseman, who threw the final 4 2/3 innings, got the win after shutting the Vikings down in the bottom half in the 10-9 victory.

Saturday marked the start of game two in the series, this one taking place in Leesburg. The offense struggled for the Lakehawks driving in three runs on five hits. The Vikings plated nine runs in the game to create a split in the series with the 9-3 win.

Scott collected a two hit ball game while driving in one run and collecting a stolen base. Cameron Recny suffered the loss in game two.

Game three of the series was a rubber match. On the road for the second time in four days, Lake-Sumter got on the board during their first at-bat bringing in one run. SJRSC knotted it up at 1-1 in the second inning and took the lead in the fifth with two more runs.

The Lakehawks remained scoreless from the second inning until the ninth, when two more runs came around to score. With a three run seventh inning and another run coming around in the eighth for St. John's, LSSC fell, 7-3.

Alan Alonso totaled three hits in the game including an RBI double. Tanner Clark posted a two hit performances as well.

Nick Labrada was tagged with the loss.

Lake-Sumter moves their season record to 1-2, 9-18-1. Conference play continues with the Lakehawks heading to Daytona Beach to take on the Falcons and begin a three games series Wednesday. Game time is set for 3 pm. Game two will be at the Hawks Nest Friday with first pitched scheduled for 3 pm.
