TAVARES, Fla. (Beach Volleyball) – The Lake-Sumter State College (LSSC) beach volleyball team completed day two of the 2023 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Beach Championship as one of two undefeated teams still standing in the tournament. The Lakehawks defeated Spartanburg Methodist and South Mountain Community College 3-0 to advance to the championship bracket on Saturday morning.

Match One – Lake-Sumter 3, Spartanburg Methodist 0

No. 2 pair Cassidy Rountree and Kaylin McCann secured their first win of the weekend in two sets, 21-14, 21-16.

No. 4s Leslie Catlett and Jayden Ponsford also won in two sets, 21-12, 21-15.

No. 5 pair Berklee Andrews and Alanis Figueroa Rivera defeated the Pioneer fives, 21-11, 21-18.

Match Two – Lake-Sumter 3, South Mountain 0

No. 4s pair Catlett and Ponsford won in two sets, 21-12, 21-13.

No. 5 pair Andrews and Figueroa Rivera won in two, 21-13, 21-12.

No. 2s Rountree and McCann secured the team win defeating the Cougars pair in two sets, 21-15, 21-18.

Lake-Sumter and Palm Beach State College are now the only two teams left undefeated in the tournament.

Head Coach Neal Stanley shared his feelings about the team's performance so far, "I cannot express how proud I am of this team! We have been working all season for this moment and being able to do it on our home court makes it even more special."

The Lakehawks are now slated to play familiar Region 8 opponent St. Johns River State College (SJRSC) Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. The winner will move on to the title match at 2:15 p.m.

Lake-Sumter and SJRSC are no strangers to one another on the beach courts as this will be their fifth matchup this season. The last time the teams met was in the semifinal match at the Region 8 championship where the Lakehawks eliminated the Vikings to advance to the title match.

The championship match will be between the winner of Lake-Sumter versus SJRSC and Palm Beach State versus South Mountain. The match is scheduled for 2:15 p.m.
