TAVARES, Fla. (Beach Volleyball) – The Lake-Sumter State College (LSSC) beach volleyball team wraps up day one of the 2023 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Beach Championship with a pair of wins. The Lakehawks defeated Bryant & Stratton College – WI and Mesa Community College 3-0 in both matches.

Match One – Lake-Sumter 3, Bryant & Stratton 0

No. 3 pair Alyssa Guarino and Leanne Blue defeated the Pioneer pair in two sets, 21-7, 21-10.

No. 4 pair Leslie Catlett and Jayden Ponsford also won their dual handily in two sets, 21-2, 21-4.

No. 5 pair Berklee Andrews and Alanis Figueroa Rivera snagged the team win in two sets, 21-7, 21-6.

Match Two – Lake-Sumter 3, Mesa 0

No. 1s Kaylee Hunt and Yarelis Lopez Osorio got their first dual win of the weekend after defeated the Mesa pair, 21-14, 21-13.

No. 3 pair Guarino and Blue defeated the Thunderbird pair in two sets, 21-10, 21-12.

No. 5s Andrews and Figueroa Rivera also got their second win of the day in two sets, 21-15, 21-17.

Lake-Sumter won out of Pool C after going 2-0 on the day. Mesa went 1-1 and Bryant & Stratton went 0-2.

The Lakehawks will take on Spartanburg Methodist for their first match of the day tomorrow morning at 10:15 a.m. Spartanburg went 1-1 on the first day of competition, defeating Trinidad State 3-0 and losing to St. Johns River State College 3-0.

For the season, Spartanburg is 17-14 overall with a 5-1 conference record. The Pioneers are one of three Region 10 representatives in the tournament.

The result of tomorrow morning's first match will determine where Lake-Sumter moves in the bracket.

The winner of tomorrow's match, listed Challenge Round 4 in the bracket, will play the winner of Challenge Round 2 between Bryant & Stratton – VA and South Mountain Community College. The loser of tomorrow's match plays the loser Challenge Round 2.

Two wins tomorrow will advance the Lakehawks to the Champ bracket on Saturday.
