BRADENTON, Fla. (Beach Volleyball) – The Lake-Sumter State College (LSSC) beach volleyball team opened the 2023 season at the State College of Florida (SCF) Trimatch at Upper Manatee River Complex in Bradenton, Fla. The Lakehawks opened with a 4-1 win over (SCF) and fell to St. Johns River State College (SJRSC) 3-2.
Match One – Lake-Sumter 4 (1-0), SCF 1 (0-1)
The Lakehawks defeated the 2022 AVCA Small College Beach Champions SCF 4-1 in their first match of the day on Saturday morning.
No. 4 pair Yarelis Lopez Osorio and Jayden Ponsford won the first dual in three sets, 16-21-, 21-16, 15-11. No. 2 pair Leanne Blue and Cassidy Rountree also won in three sets, 22-20, 18-21, 15-10.
No. 5 pair Allie Cox and Berklee Andrews won the third dual in two sets, 21-15, 21-19. No. 3 pair Kaylin McCann and Leslie Catlett also won in two sets 21-12, 21-19.
No. 1 pair Alyssa Guarino and Kaylee Hunt was the only win by the Manatees for the match, 13-21, 15-21.
In exhibition, No. 6 pair Alanis Figueroa Rivera and Mazi Watson won in two sets 21-19, 21-12.
Match Two – Lake-Sumter 2 (1-1), SJRSC 3 (1-0)
In the second match of the day, the Lakehawks fell to Sun-Lakes Conference Opponent SJRSC 3-2. No. 3 pair McCann and Catlett snagged the first dual win in two sets, 21-8, 21-18.
No. 4 pair Ponsford and Lopez Osorio won in three sets 21-18, 15-21, 15-9.
No. 2 pair Blue and Rountree lost in three very close sets, 18-21, 23-21, 17-19. No. 5 pair Cox and Andrews lost in two sets to SJRSC's No. 5 10-21, 17-21.
The Vikings earned the win over Lake-Sumter in the fifth match at No. 1 pairs. Guarino and Hunt suffered their second loss on the day in three sets, 21-19, 15-21, 12-15.
In addition, the Lakehawks' No. 6 pairs Watson and Maddison Perez also won the exhibition match in two sets, 21-12, 21-17.
Up next for the Lakehawks
The Lakehawks will host Warner University and Palm Beach State on Friday, February 10 at Hickory Point in Tavares, Fla. They will play Warner first at 10:00 a.m. followed by Palm Beach State at 2:00 p.m.
