Lakehawk Athletics Highlights 2022-23 Academic and Athletic Achievements

LEESBURG, Fla. – As the 2022-23 athletic and academic season comes to a close, Lake-Sumter State College (LSSC) athletics takes some time to reflect on the achievements of the student-athletes throughout the course of the year. LSSC athletics had a very successful year both as a whole and each team individually.

Overall, there were three National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-Academic Teams (min. 3.0 team GPA), 21 NJCAA All-Academic Team members (min. 3.6 GPA), 34 Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA) All-Academic Team members (min. 3.3 GPA), and 62 Sun-Lakes Conference All-Academic Team members (min. 3.0 GPA). Additionally, 35 Lakehawk student-athletes participated in commencement.

Athletic Director Mike Matulia spoke the achievements of the Lakehawk student-athletes, "Academic excellence is expected from our student-athletes at Lake-Sumter. Each of our teams showed tremendous achievements both in the classroom and on the field on the field this year," said Coach Matulia.

Below are the individual highlights from each of the six LSSC teams from the 2022-23 school year. The academic awards listed denote how many nominees each team has as those awards for this school year have not been officially announced yet.

Volleyball

• Yarelis Lopez Osorio named to All-Sun-Lakes Conference North Division Second Team

Men's Cross Country

• Runner up finish at FCSAA/Region VIII Championship
• Eighth Place finish at NJCAA National Championship
• Colton Berquist and Cooper Krug named All-Region Runners
• Cooper Krug and Caleb Melendez named NJCAA Cross Country Coaches Association All-Americans
• Team GPA – 2.93
• FCSAA All-Academic Team (4)
• Sun-Lakes Conference All-Academic Team (7)

Women's Cross Country

• Team GPA – 2.89
• NJCAA All-Academic Award (1)

Beach Volleyball

• Runner Up finish at FCSAA/Region VIII Championship
• Third Place finish at NJCAA National Championship
• Fifth Place finish at AVCA Small College Beach Championship  
• Cassidy Rountree and Kaylin McCann named to All-FCSAA Pairs Team
• Alyssa Guarino and Kaylee Hunt named to All-FCSAA second Team
• Leanne Blue/Alyssa Guarino and Berklee Andrews/Alanis Figueroa Rivera named Second Team Doubles All-Americans

• Ali Shenefield named Most Outstanding Pitcher, Raquel Camuglia named Most Outstanding Player, Jay Miller named Coach of the Year at Region VIII Championship
• Kreighton Steinke, Ali Shenefield, Raquel Camuglia, Molly Bender, and Darian Pippin named to the all-tournament team
• Reese Snipes, Molly Bender, Raquel Camuglia, Darian Pippin, and Ali Shenefield named All-Sun-Lakes Conference First Team and All-FCSAA/All-NJCAA Region 8 Team
• Desiree Romeo and Kreighton Steinke named All-Sun-Lakes Conference Second Team
